“‘Tell me about yourself’ might be a simple question, but to me it wasn't.”

Avital Field’s conversation skills and confidence have blossomed during her time as a Career Peer. Since her start at Career Services in August 2018, she has interacted with many employers through various events and networking opportunities.

Avi has found that her biggest takeaway from Career Services has been learning how to introduce and talk about herself.

“I have a lot more confidence now because you will always have to introduce yourself no matter what job you go to.”

Her “lightbulb moment”

“For Mock Interview Day specifically, I thought I was pretty prepared, but when I met with someone, I was stumped when they asked me questions. I learned I definitely needed to practice more beforehand.”

Mock Interview Days are held a few times each semester at Career Services, where employers from the Cleveland area facilitate 30-minute mock interviews with students and evaluate their performance with real time feedback.

“It was a good experience for me to know how I need to prepare before an interview.”

At the Careers With Social Impact event in February 2019, Avi arrived to the event during the speed networking portion, and jumped right into the action.

“I learned how to talk to more than one person at a time, and I learned that I should also be asking them questions – it’s not just a one-way street conversation.”

What she wants her fellow students to know:

“We're more than just an office that looks at resumes. We have Mock Interview Days, Resume Rx and all kinds of different resources for students to use.”

“I am really happy that I work here. I have learned a lot of transferable skills.

At first, it’s not that I wasn't interested in the position, but I thought it had to do more with business practices, and I wasn’t sure how much I would get out of it. But I have definitely learned a lot that I can apply even in the healthcare career field.”

More about Avi

Avi obtained a B.S. in Pre-Occupational Therapy at Ohio University, and is currently pursuing an M.A. in Occupational Therapy. She expects to graduate in December 2019.

Avi likes being outdoors and enjoys paddle boarding, kayaking, and hiking. She loves to read mystery novels. She also has a cat named Wiley who acts like a dog.

More about Career Peers

A Career Peer’s role is to make sure the front end of the office runs smoothly by managing student, faculty, and employers’ requests via phone, email, and walk-ins. Career Peers serve as ambassadors to other students on behalf of the Career Services office, helping their peers understand all of the professional development tools, resources, and strategies they need to be successful as aspiring and evolving professionals.
