February 2021: A Letter from the Job Lady

Updated: Mar 19, 2021

A Letter from the Job Lady image banner. White background with with orange, blue, yellow, purple, and green dots of various sizes. Green text February 2021 A letter from the Job Lady. CSU seal Career Services logo. @The LobLadyatCSU twitter logo. On the right side of the banner: an illustration of a woman with her hair up in a bun, wearing a blue pant suit and white sneakers with gold stripes. She has her left hand on her left hip and her right hand up, elbow bent, gesturing at the text.

Can you believe it’s the second week of February already? Here’s hoping your semester is off to a great start.

  • We’ve started ours off with a bang, having completed tens of classroom presentations, countless coaching appointments, the first workshop in a series for exploratory students (a partnership with Academic Advising!), and an information session on Careers in Non-Profit, co-hosted with The Cleveland Foundation, Cuyahoga Arts & Culture, Youth Opportunities Unlimited (Y.O.U.), Benjamin Rose Institute on Aging, and the Cleveland Institute of Art!

  • There is no question our events have appealed to students, creating opportunities for them to speak with employers, ask them questions, and network in real time. And we also have incredible content! Hat tip to Amy Goldman, our Associate Director and resident cheerleader for “Three Sets of Information”, who is responsible for a majority of our career and professional development content. Amy came to Cleveland State with over 25 years of career coaching experience, having done this critical work at a social services agency and two other higher education institutions (Case Western Reserve University—where she single-handedly generated a world-wide network of hundreds of alumni before LinkedIn figured it out—and, the Cleveland Institute of Art). Amy got us started with our now-famous “one-pagers,” which include critical information and tips about any topic you can imagine—from networking and the informational interview to negotiating a salary offer—and way, way more. We use these one-pagers in all of our appointments as instructive tools for students - including telling students that they will need three sets of information as they embark on a job search: self, the world of work, and CSU’s curriculum. These documents are tangible take-aways that students can keep and refer to throughout their professional careers. Truly priceless!

  • February 24th marks the Greater Cleveland Partnership’s fifth Internship Summit, sponsored by Cleveland State University! I am proud to say that we have been part of planning this dynamic and meaningful event for all five years. I am looking forward to facilitating one of the panels, along with colleagues from Tri C and Kent State University on everything from successful internship programs to helping employers understand how to be more inclusive in their recruiting and hiring practices. Be sure to check out the agenda (and see if you can spy your CSU colleagues in the video) for a great virtual event this year.

  • Are you on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook? Please follow us (and/or encourage your students to) @CSU_Careers for helpful information about skill development and the world of work—not just our events.

That’s plenty for now. Here’s to a productive February!
